I have been raising birds for a long time and have recently gotten into lavenders with the new "self blue" craze. I can't find any information about this, but I raise lavender and black Pekins (Cochin bantams). I was wondering what would happen if I added some blue birds (BBS) to the lavender flock. I realize that in the F1 generation, the blue/lavender splits would appear as a normal BBS. However, I was wondering, what would happen if I bred one of those back to another lavender? Theoretically, 50% of the chicks would have lavender genes and 50% would have blue. So, if one chick were to end up with both lavender genes and blue, what would that produce? Does anyone know what this would look like? Thanks!

Shaffer, thank you so much for your reply! I am eager to see the pictures and discussion. However, I am not sure which of the forums that deal with Orpingtons that you are referring to. There are many. Thanks!

There is only one United Orpington Club so just type in yahoo; United Orpington CLub Forum. You are not a member but you can read what was discussed but can not log in.

Found them. Beautiful birds! I think I'm going to stick with my black based lavenders though. It appeared from the pictures (and I could be wrong) that the lavender BBS had more of a white/gray underside than pure lavender. I originally got into lavenders because of the beautiful slate gray/blue color and it appears that the BBS slightly fades that. Thanks again!!!

You are correct about the color but that is what I seek to have a sterling colore lavender. Some of my chicks hatch pure white.

Wow! That is pretty incredible! Those birds are certainly beautiful! I guess the slate blue gray color is just a personal preference if I have to choose colors in my limited space. Thanks again for the information and for directing me to the pictures! Very informative and incredible birds!
