. I really want some lavender babies

I can't wait to get mine in May.......

Has anyone detailed the crossing to a black to you? I would like for someone to explain to me in layman terms what the outcome is. As I will want to add more bloodlines to the flock.

Do you get black birds carrying the lavender gene and continue to cross them back until the babies come out lavender? Or, do you get half lavender, half black babies????

Don't forget to cross with your best blue laying hens. Mine will be large fowl, so I will also be looking for my largest hens to do the cross with.

Jean,
When you breed your good blacks to the Lavender all the chicks will be visual black carrying the recessive Lavender gene.
You have several matings you can do from these offsprings:
black/lav to black/lav and get 75% blacks and 25% Lavenders.
You can breed an original Lavender to the black/lav and get 50% blacks/lav and 50% Lavenders.
Either way the offsprings should improve some but the second one will give you more Lavender chicks to pick your next year breeding stock.
I hope you toe punch the black/lav when born so as not to introduce them into you pure black line.
I do not mix blacks and experimental Lavender breedings in the same hatch because they look alike and I want my blacks pure for myself.
If you get good enough Lavenders you may just want to breed them to each other for a couple of years. The color will be nicer than introducing blacks into them. HS

Jean,
I forgot one thing about the first breeding. The first breeding of black/lav to black/lav is only good for keeping the Lavenders.
The blacks will not all be black/lav, 1/3 of the blacks would be pure blacks and their is no visual way to tell which carry the Lavender gene. You don't want to waist a breeding season by test mating these birds. I'd cull all of them instead of raising them.
you'd get 25% pure Lavender, 25% pure blacks and 50% black/lav. HS

I think I got 3 LF lavenders in my chicks from John today. How exciting. With my luck probably all cockerels, but I have LF blacks I can use them with.

I wanted 10 of them, so I ordered more chicks. I needed 25 more like I need a hole in the head.......

I know what you mean..I ordered 25, he sent 35.. I was in shock. I didn't know if I would get any LF lavenders but he was nice enough to include some. I have no idea where I am going with everyone once they outgrow my brooder. I guess I better get building
