Lavender Orpington project ....

I have to post here now to keep track of the thread and learn new stuff... I have a couple of lavender orp chicks now, don't know if they're boy/girl/whatever yet!

They're a month old now, so I guess it's time for more photos.

I have a pair of 2nd gen LOPs, hatched on 2/12/10. They are my first orpingtons.
I've been waiting for the pullet to lay her first egg. Today I found this little light brown pullet egg. Does it look like a first orp egg?

And here are my Lavs

I can't wait to get home today and see if she laid another one.

Too soon, no egg from her today.

How many eggs a week do orps produce usually? Are they high producers or like 3 a week?

Wow! They look great! I TOLD you I thought it was a pair the day they hatched! I just had a "first egg" two days ago from my first home bred lav. There is no roo old enough to breed her so it is a dud. I will eat it. It will be the first lav orp egg I ever ate, LMAO. It looks exactly like the one you showed. Same color. The lav pullet laid the same pretty warm peach colored egg too. Glad the next generation is keepin up on that color. The other hens laid a light brown/tinted, and a nearly white egg. I can't wait to see what color the other three lay. Their combs are not even red yet though, it will be awhile. Plus I have one pullet growing out here at home. I have two lav roos growing out that made the cut so far, cull wise, and I have about a half dozen big black poofy gentle things growing out from BamaChicken! One really is looking extra thick and big! I can't wait to cross him on my lav girls! I have three nice black orp pullets to go with the black roo, so I can have both colors. WOOT! Congrats on your new egg! From the looks of your roo, it should be fertile!

Ohh Man! Now I've gotta go and build yet another pen. I've got to have some of these beauties! Let's see - in chicken math if I get rid of one of my spare buff orpington roosters in one of our breeder pens I should be able to get six of these Lavender Ladies.
She loves me, she won't really mind, really she won't mind, not much anyway... Maybe if I hide them behind the barn until she forgets how many chickens we have.
Help

They are so beautiful OnTheSpot and both so sweet. Though a couple of my smaller hens are going a little bald on the tops of their heads from all the 'attention.' He's in with 12 hens but 3 are too young and the top hen won't have anything to do with him.
The first egg was pretty small so I didnt' want to hatch it. I'll be patient.

He's huge. How big are orp roosters supposed to be?

Big! BamaChicken told me she likes the chicks that hatch out with "big heads" and a pretty eye. Large, gentle roos, broader across the back than the lavenders tend to be, more "poof" to their look, and softer tail feathers. I will see if I can find one of her pics and post it here. Hope she doesn't mind. Okay, found it. Think of breeding for this! except in lavender. Lot of work to do. See how the tail feathers look? Shoot for that. This photo is property of BamaChicken, shows her birds and I am using it to illustrate type only, make no representation that I have this type, color or quality of orps. (yet!)
