We have a seven month old lavendar orpington rooster. He is a cutie. He has not crowed yet and his comb is very small. Is this normal? He seems to be getting bigger, tho. Does anyone know the growth rate of these breeds?

Hi :)

I don't have lavender Orpingtons (though I do want some!), but I do have buff Orpingtons. I have 3, 2 males, 1 female. I know that they are a larger, heavier breed that takes longer to mature. One of my males has a big huge comb and crows every day. The other roo is a little fatter, has a little bit of a smaller comb, and I think he has only crowed once or twice. It could be that yours just won't choose to crow a lot. Is it a hatchery chicken or breeder chicken? I know sometimes breeder ones can take longer to mature. Mine are hatchery ones, and I believe they are matured and the one just doesn't like to crow for some reason. They are all completely healthy. So it could be yours just isn't as much of an alpha roo :) I'm not an expert but I wouldn't be concerned. Just my thinking on it

We have 3 buff orpingtons too and I think I remember them growing slowly. This is the first rooster orpington. He is from a person who has a chicken farm so what you said makes sense. He does make cute little noises. I won't worry than. As long as he grows up to protect the girls. Thanks!
