Lavender Orpington Thread

All of our adult chickens come when called. I simply yell "Ch- Ch- Chickens" & a bunch of fluffy little balls come bouncing/running from wherever they're hiding. To amuse our friends, the kids like to call them then run the other way. (The chickens chase the kids around the yard in hopes of treats.) I don't have the energy to chase chickens, so they are trained to put themselves in the coop when told. That way we can leave the house knowing they're safe.

With Cuddles we're doing clicker training. I taught her to peck at a red chip. She will always seek out the red chip & ignore all the other colors. I plan to write words & do some funny yes/no tricks. She also comes to her name.

Hi Everyone. I am wondering if I could get some help. I am trying to start a Lavender project and so far I bought 6 hatching eggs through the mail and only one egg hatched. I have one lavender pullet. I also bought blue,black and splash eggs from a local breeder and she gave me one lavender egg. However she said she was not sure if enough time had passed since the Black roo was with her lavender so could not be sure the chick would be lavender. I had better results with this hatch 11 out of 12 eggs hatched. One chick is different from the rest and I am hoping it is a lavender. But it seems darker then the other lavender I have. I have posted pictures. Some are grey with buff bellys some are black and white. I would appreciate any help . They are 2 1/2 weeks old.

Congrats on the great hatch results! I only have 2 lav orps, but mine were much lighter as chicks. Maybe others with more experience will have better insight. Off topic: I think we have the twin to the rooster in your avatar.

Thanks for the response.Yes you have a twin. He looks just like our Butch! Beautiful bird. Butch has a wonderful personality and is also very friendly. What is your roosters name?

My daughter claimed him & named him Brownie. He's still very friendly & lets my daughter do anything to him. He at least did better than my son's hen - named Firefighter. (We thought she was a roo & planned not to keep it.)

I'm thinking I read somewhere, periodically you need to breed the Lavenders with a Black Orpington to refresh the Lavender.

The kids love that story. I have read a lot about clicker training with horses, never thought about chickens, very cool. Thanks for the explanation.

I think that it is for getting a more correct body type, then you breed those chicks back to the lavender for the color. At least that is my limited understanding, maybe someone with more knowledge will answer. So much to read and learn I most certainly could be mixing it up. Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
