Lavender Orpington?

joletabey is wanting to know the HOW in a breeding a project like this. I will try again .
You get a Lavender Ameraucana and breed that to a Black ORPINGTON, then take the offspring, which are F-1's, those F-1's that have a single comb you will keep to breed to each other. Within a few generations you should be able to see more Orpington type IF you know what the standard is that you are breeding too. It will take years before you completely breed out the characteristics of the Ameraucanas.
This is the " H O W " that joletabey is asking. I am sure joletabey knows how to buy eggs and birds. And yes that is an easier route. BUT, unless the birds she is buying has the Orpington type, it is not an Orpington. joletabey will have just as long a project as he/she would have buying a non finished project bird from someone else. And this is not a bad question to know the answer of "HOW people breed project birds". This is how it is described to me by someone who is doing several ORPINGTON color projects. I hope this helps.

I'd bet that Hinkjc has the best Lav Orps in the USA right now, but he hardly 'created' them kathyinmo. I've always read that Priscilla Middleton had a big hand if not the only hand in developing the color strain. They've been in the UK for ages now and are almost common among Orpington breeders.

I can't find it now, but the Practical Poultry May 2008 issue had a big feature on her work creating lav orps and her (then new) work on Lav ducks.

I might be wrong but didn't Hinkjc get his stock from Priscilla Middleton?

I live in Indy and 2011 we're having the Orpington nationals, that would be a great place for all who have Lav Orps to bring them out and show them Orps off. I can't wait.

alicefelldown, I hope IF the HINK's did get their LAV bird from Priscilla, they have their paperwork for the legal importation. The US AG Dept reads these threads. You may have given them a lead to investigate.

Thank you for ALL responses, I got my "how" and got some "wheres" just in case!

I had no idea you started with an Americauna- it could be fun. I am getting some BBS orp babies in February- let's see if I get a beautiful black roo- it could be fun to try this. There are SO many beautiful breed and colors out there, I wish I had room for them all!

No imports here, we didn't need to import to develop these wonderful Lavender orpington birds.. the USA has everything needed to develop what one may want.. are next generation's are well on there way and will be even more spectacular in the near future..

However Priscilla's birds and others around the world were a big inspiration to us to strive to develop are own lavender birds..which are well on there way along with other colors we set out to work on..lots and lots of work and space needed to do these projects..

but it is alot of fun esp all the controversy which really makes it more exciting to prefect these projects....all the free press one would need to make one stride towards perfection of ones developments
