This is off on a tangent a bit -- but years ago (2014) Nicalandia found this image when there was a discussion of Cream Legbar colors.

It's here post 3217 along with a female of this breed (Dutch Bantam)
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/713115/cream-legbar-working-group-standard-of-perfection/3210

-- I looked at the picture caption and used google translate to get the english version - It's "cuckoo blue partridge"

Some the things I'm aiming for are evident in this bird. Nice barring, nice red shoulder, nice white earlobe and differentation in the white earlobe and the hackles. Yep, I know blue is different from lavender - even though lavender is called self-blue sometimes..... The evidence of the duckwing along with the barring -- and the barring in a neat pattern.

People in Europe do some pretty amazing things with chickens.

Back in post 122 - there was a review of the differences shown in the 'poster boy' Isabel leghorn and the Brahman Bantam.....and 'the female will come later' -- Let's look at the female now from that PDF
(This PDF)

Isabella Leghorn pullet. Photo: Wolters.
Here is the description of the Leghorn female:
'Colour and marking of the hen: Neck hackle: straw colour with lavender striping in the middle. Shoulders, back and cushion: light lavender ground colour (with a cream hue) and a darker lavender ‘peppering’ and cream shafts. Some straw colour lacing is permitted. Breast: light salmon. Down: (light) lavender. '

Here is the description of the photo of the Brahma Bantam female:
"Colour and marking of the female: Neck hackle: straw colour with lavender striping in the centre. Shoulders, back, cushion and breast: cream, patterned with a number of concentric lavender rings. Down: (light) lavender."

Females have a less complex coloration in these two photos than the males had in the earlier post
  • Female leghorn, like the male shows more contrast (lighter lights and darker darks, you can see where her tail has lavender diluting it from the dark black/brown of the gold duckwing.
  • Neither shot shows the salmon breast of the Leghorn or the cream of the bantam - it is something to note that different breeds will show Isabel in a different way

Because the male of most birds are flashier, do the females get less attention?

The above three pictures shot here - the top one showing the pale salmon and the second and third one whoeing the straw hackles with lavender center stripe - and the last noe showing that the tail is a bit darker.

Wondering what the Legbar genetics will do to the mix.
The two females that are now a month and a half old - look a little more saturated than the pure Isabels were at the same age of growing out. The male is lighter than the females. One female still has the appearance she will grow up barred. The male has some barred feathers.

Female background, male foreground

Faint barring on the tail of the other female.

From the next hatch - (and doesn't the middle child always get fewer pictures taken?

Thinking that it is two males and a female. One male is younger - all the splits from this hatch are rehomed.

The projected female, may hae a crest

Pretty sure it is a male

different view of maybe crest -- and remember she could have at most 1 cresting gene. Isabel mother and split father.....

The baby of the family -- but maybe not for long. Broody is due today but no chicks yet, however a definite zip going on -- Maybe tomorrow morning? And lock-down for the big incubator.

How exciting...
are you going to be able to sleep tonight?

Probably! It is one of my great talents. All I have to do to fall asleep is eithr be horizontal - or sit in a window seat on a plane and put my head against the wall/window. LOL. Planted a cuple of jasmine vines today -- and I'm tired from digging holes.

I hear ya....I'm not that good of a sleeper....but I took worked in the yard and am feeling it.

I got 35 okra, 35 green beans, 35, spinach, and 25 cucumbers planted today!

How many eggs are in lockdown?

You did way more than I did that's for sure. Sounds like you are going to have quite a veggie garden going.

It's 46. Yes, I will be a nervous Nelly for the duration. The eggs looked good that I candled, but I didn't candle all 46. My air cells are never as big as the 'books' say they should be, and yet my hatches are generally good. This incubator is the first time I knew what the humidity reading is supposed to be. Before it was just 'fill up both wells with water'.
Meanwhile broody is on 4 remaining eggs...... I told her to hatch all Isabel barred and she told me to 'go fly a kite'.

Her comb, wattles and face are pretty pale - and I popped her on the scale yesterday and she was around 3 1/2 pounds, she should weigh around 5 pounds. Hopefully she can hatch the chicks and then start eating full time.

5:55AM - two brown babies that still look damp, (yes I lifted the hen) and two eggs to go. Happy St. Paddy's day. Pictures later.

awe Patty and Patrick!

congrats Grandma!

give that momma some worms!

Oh, poor thing, how many more days will the eggs hatch? Maybe put some water and food near her?
