Good news!I candled the eggs today, all but 4 are developing nicely! Thank, ChicKat ! Your roosters are surely doing the job. Unlike the rooster in my project pen, so far only half the eggs are developing

That is so great.! - Wow, I hope that you have a good hatch. Your other guy is Orpington and I've heard it is harder for them to breed because of all the fluf, have you noticed that?.....Thanks for the update. You're doing well.

For me, I discarded 4 at my first candling. That incubator says day 11 today -- so I will candle again in 3 days -- a good chance to see if the air sacs look reasonable. I just don't know about the humidity & heat of this new one.

Meanwhile, my broody on 5 eggs - appears to have broken and eaten one. One seems cold to the touch, I think she isn't really incubating that one -- so that brings it to hopes of 3. Twice she pooped on the eggs. Yesterday it was my fault because she is in a box within the pet carrier - and I lift out the box and clean the PDZ. She decided to streach her legs while the box was outside the pet carrier -and stood on the side of the box and pooped all over her eggs. Gross... (yeah I know TMI

) She has begun to take a break from the nest now and then -- yesterday she emptied her cage cup of water -- I try to give her a pep talk..."6 more days, c'mon, you can do it'. She is a great little chicken - but not as instinctively brilliant as that little OEGB - but then she can only hatch 2 at a time -- and I think being small makes it easier to manuever inside a pet carrier.

Nicalandia - if you stop by -- Have you encountered - on your internet travels, any relationship between the Mahogany gene and the colors of lavender?

Moonshiners Poultry -- I'm very curious about what a juvenile barred Leghorn looks like. Do you by chance have any picts you would care to share? The reason is that I read some place that every breed manifests the color patterns a little differently. That's evidenced even in our first .pdf file where they show the Isabel Leghorn and the Brahman bantam. The Leghorn is prettier IMO - although the brahman has more saturation of the 'straw' color.

Both pictures from this article on the internet:

Of course the lighting is different, and the cameras are different etc.etc. - however, it appears to me that:

  • Leghorn shows more contrast - lighter lights and darker darks
  • Brahman shows more saturation/color - on the warm spectrum
  • For me - the wing triangle on the Leghorn looks white while the wing triangle on the Brahman looks that peachy color - which would be the diluted gold/brown you would expect on a gold duckwing base.

Later - an analysis of the females - been at the computer too long and the pens should be poop scooped shouldn't they?

ETA - the saddle feathers on that Brahman Bantam do have that kind of 'glow' that the Isabel feathers have.

Cream Legbars like to go inside and play when they are juveniles. This is something I first noticed when I had my first pair on the ranch in 2012. All my other chickens only went in to lay eggs and roost. So I was a bit concerned -- but they go in there and just hang out -- When Cream Legbars are happy they make a little trilling sound (hear it most in old chicks and juveniles, not as often in adults)--- It's sort of half a purr and half a trill. So they go in, sit there and purr. This is an old mailbox and all three are inside -- and they seem as happy as clams.

I guess these three are going to be the most photographed talked about chickens in the USA -- but I'm fascinated. Some darker feathers are coming out on the tail of one of the females and on the wings of the male - no problems showing with feather damage. So that's the CL quirk that these three have -- hang out inside while growing up -- and purr.

I think I know this sound!
My Dominque is the only one who "talks" to me like this...I couldn't figure out how to describe it but your description is perfect for it.

So cute..
I love your mail!

Thanks! Yes, that must be the case, perhaps I need to do some feathers trimming?
I will candle them again in 10 days.
Sorry to hear about the broody hen. I hope she will at least hatch out the remaining 3 eggs. My bantam Cochin is very good natural mom. They are light weight and won't break eggs easily like my English Orpingtons.

Will keep you updated and look forward to seeing your new hatchlings

Good! Was out there in the chicken rooom and thinking I'm as excited for your hath as I am for mine!

THANK YOU - Pure Leghorn barring looks a bit different from Legbar. Now my chicks are from a pure Leghorn hen and a half-Leghorn and half-Legbar male -- so They are going to be more Leghorn looking I think. Then the next generation (count your chickens before they hatch!) -- will be 3/4 +3/4 so still 3/4 Leghorn -- but Legbars have Leghorn in their make up -- soooo It shouldn't be too much of a genetics battle. - This is going on the theory that every various breed will manifest patterns a little differently.

ETA - one difference that pops out at me is the tops of the heads have a barring that I haven't seen in any of my Legbars.

That's so interesting. Does the Dominique spend a lot of time inside 'playing house' -- or I guess if a male 'playing fort' ? -- I know that chickens are naturally 'cavity nesters' -- Makes me wonder if the world is perfect when they have a nice dark hangout and easy access to outdoors whenever they want it.....

Hmm no..she doesn't play house. She is the first, when I walk up to the coop to let them out, to greet me with her purrs...the only one who makes these sounds.
She will stay right in front of me almost begging me to "pet" her.

I will take a video tomorrow.
