Wanted to share a pic.
This guy is from an isabel rooster over cuckoo hen so its a single barred male.
He has so much more white then any other single barred chick ive hatched.

Thanks for the picture -- it is amazing how the bars traverse his whole wing without interruption like they are stripes.

Also love that this little guy has a definite headspot. That shows that the male head spot can be present with just one barring gene (if it is the right one?) --- It also looks like the eye has a white rim.

It is going to be soooo interesting to watch this chick grow out!

Hey there KikisGirls -- You must have psycic powers and be a mind reader....LOL

hhong3138 and I were saying we were glad our breeding seasons were winding down and then blam! we both had fowl go broody. One should never let a broody hen go to waste - right?
So, not project birds, but Cream Legbars -- I have two little boys that are 5-days old. As a backup -- just incase none of the broody's hatched I stuck some eggs in the incubator and they are due in 5-days. Then...I'll have 'em all hatched

It's nice to be back to autosexing...she hatched two boys, and one girl was shrink wrapped, so it can even happen to a broody hen. This was her second time being broody! She also hatched a couple of chicks this spring -- both were splits.

Meanwhile I'm trying to engineer a solution to my problem of pen flooding. The water wasn't deep enough to kill the juveniles, and it didn't last too long -- but I need to address the drainage in that pen. It needs to clear out the water faster and at the same time not provide entrance for predators. Have a rat snake hanging around out there...hoping the snake is after the mice and not the chickens/eggs.

so just envision me -- shovel in hand trying to dig a trench in my 10x20 pen....while at the same time dodging the heat of the day -- I have had a couple of heat index readings in the triple digits and as high as 112.

Here was the 'flood'
Luckily the old coop wasn't taken apart for cleaning as yet, and I threw the chicks in there....Here's one on the roof drying out:

The same pen on a drier day:

You can see the water was only about 2" -- but still that's too much. Dig under the edge of the pen and use PVC pipe to funnel water out -- and make a trench in the pen to divert all the excess. Does it sound like too much fun? Put Hardware Cloth on both ends of the pipe to prevent it being a snake highway, and figure a way to prevent the sandy silt from filling it up.

Meanwhile -- once that is done, and the base is reassembled, and the house/coop is back together and in there...
aLL the brooder babies (except the June ones) can be put outdoors. There are still 5 in the garage in the galvanized watering trough. Of course that's once they are leg-banded. (See how one thing is dependent upon another thing and all these other things are as yet undone? ROFL
:)
The oldest 'Robinson' family has their big-kid legbands now and the oldest 'Twin' pullets have theirs. Their brother C-Boy and 4 females are all in new homes now.

Remember it was one thing after another for me for a while...
sounds like you are following me around.
UGH.....
Rain plain stinks sometime huh.
I hope you get it all figured out soon...and hopefully no big monster storms this summer :fl That is the last thing I was to deal with this year.

Tell Camp to keep the snakes on her side of the boarder! She's been dealing with a lot lately.

You ARE right, I'm following right in your footsteps. Oh yeah, hurricane season -- let's hope for a grand total of zero this year!!

They like it warm! Camp -- keep all those snakes in LA please. ;O/ . I have some soil sulfur I could powder the ground with outside the pens. That may make them want to hang out elsewhere.....

That's a speckled king snake! Nice friendly fellow to have around. I had to dispatch one recently. :(
Thanks, I always wonder what those are. Once I nearly thought one was a garden hose.

Dispatch because too close for comfort? I let that one go and haven't seen it or any slither tracks/marks around here lately.

Now that you gave me the name -- here are some interesting trivia facts:
Description:
A medium to large, shiny black snake covered with small yellow spots. The ground color is generally black or dark brown. A white or yellow spot in the center of most of the scales makes it look speckled. The belly is yellowish with some irregular or rectangular black markings. In young individuals, the light spots form crossbars along the back. Like the rest of our kingsnakes, this species vibrates its tail when alarmed. When captured, they may try to bite and will smear a foul-smelling musk onto your hands, but they quickly calm down and can be easily handled.

Never knew that they could smear a foul-smelling musk on your hands. ick. That would deter me. (not to mention a nice little row of teeth marks). Then easily handled. no thanks.

My BFF was visiting and called from outside that there was a snake trying to get into the brooder. He was in the flower bed when I dispatched him. When I got the full story later, he was apparently on the porch and my son found him. I think they startled each other and he most likely went up the brooder for a place to hide, since he was still traveling along when I got to him. :(
