Lavender vs. Self-Blue??

Blue coloured chickens
There are 3 genotypes for Blue coloured fowl.

The gene is Lav Lavender, the colour is Self-Blue in the US, Lavender in the rest of the English speaking world & Pearl-Grey in Europe.

Andalusian Blue Bl is the gene, the colour can vary dependant on the modifiers present,
it can be a Laced Blue, the norm in the USA, when the Pattern gene,Columbian & Melanotic are present;
or an unlaced Pigeon egg Blue, more common in the UK & Europe, when these modifiers are not present. This gene expresses Blue as a heterozygote, Splash as a homozygote.

Smokey is the gene I^s, the colour is a true breeding blue. This gene is an allele of Dominant White.

i think it should be termed lavender over self-blue, i found the self-blue term very confusing until i did research on it.

If I'm not mistaken, there are no breeds in which "lavender" is accepted, they are called "self blue". I think you will have a hard time trying to get a variety, already accepted in several breeds under one name, accepted into a breed under a new name. While lavender may be an easier term for a newbie to understand, someone already involved in raising exhibition birds would much more readily accept, and understand, what a self blue bird is. I believe that trying to add new names to an existing variety will just make it more confusing in the long run.

Problem is you have two standards committees to convince: both APA and ABA. They do coordinate together, with the goal of making preventing conflicting standards between the two organizations.

I was contacted a while back by one of the breed clubs (I think the Silkie Club), and asked whether there was anyone in the Cochin Club (Cochins International) working on Self-Blue (Lavender) Cochins, and if so was there any intent to have a qualifying meet for them in the future. The answer I provided back was that yes, there is at least a couple people working on the Self-Blue Cochins. Since I am in fact one of those people, it is my intent to pursue a qualifying meet for them in the future as Self-Blue Cochins. It's already a recognized variety in both Standards, and the name is self explanatory (no pun intended, okay maybe a little pun intended). Self-Blue to me means (non genetic terms), that bred to itself, the progeny are the same color as the parents (i.e. Self-Blue X Self-Blue produces Self-Blue). Not confusing to me at all. Blue is one variety, Self-Blue another, so I for one would not be in favor of the use of Lavender as the variety description.

To add more confusion in the UK the colour in Pekins ( bantam Cohins in the US) is called Reynold's Blue.
Now wouldn't a World consensus for Standards be great. Never happen.
