I have a new question for you "sugardine" folks.... since I only have povadine liquid I have been putting it in a plastic cup with the sugar and then spooning it out onto the gauze pad. Rather than going to the store AGAIN and buying MORE meds... could I try making a goop out of antibiotic ointment and the sugar / povadine mix? Would that even work (mixing it) ?
I will change his wraps again in a couple of hours and put just ointment on it and be done for the night, but mixing it might be an idea to try tomorrow.

I think he looks pretty good considering everything he's been through. We had a hen with a broken leg and it took a couple of weeks before we were in the clear and she was in nowhere near as bad of shape as he is. It really is amazing how tough chickens are.

They don't give up like some humans would. They just have an incredible will to live.

Again, those pictures are great! They say a picture is worth a thousand words...it looks to me like the ladies don't see anything wrong with Kubota.

We never bothered with the antibiotic ointment when we were using the sugardine. Using poviderm ointment with the sugar makes the bandage stick better and you'll have an easier time working with it. Keep it on the wound as much as possible and change daily, washing and drying between bandage changes. Pink flesh means it is working!!!
You can get a tub of poviderm at an equine supply store.

I have him unwrapped with his leg drying. I will take photos when I go back out. Be prepared though, because his stump is starting to look really bad... it looks like (sorry graphic ) ......
rotten meat, but it doesn't smell bad? He just smells like chicken, poo, and iodine? not pleasant, but not rotten or dead meat smell.

I don't have honey, but I bet it would be easier than the mess I make with the 'sugardine' lol

Catstar- mostly I was just thinking the ointment would help me keep the gauze on while I bandage?


ETA - his comb is red again? though his face is still so pale

and a question - he hasn't had any grit. Can I just put some oyster shell in there with him?

I found a streak of green under his feathers at his hock.....

I had already put my phone away so no pic. Is it probably gangrene?
