Lawnmower vs Rooster GRAPHIC PICS/ Saying Goodbye

I honestly have no idea. I think it has to do with their body's ability to process the calcium? Or maybe they build up calicum deposits? No idea ... sorry

. I think he probably gets calcium from the layer pellets, yogurt and from the occasional sardine that he eats.

Right now too much calcium is the least of my concerns. I just don't feel like he is fighting as hard. Maybe he is depressed always being in that trailer/ kennel but it didn't stop raining until tonight, after dark. It is supposed to rain again tomorrow.

He doesn't eat well enough to be entertained by hanging something (cabbage, etc) from the top of the kennel - at least, I dont' think so. Maybe I will try it... I have to do something. I don't want to lose him after 2 weeks because of him giving up.

he is indeed a beautiful bird.... just wet, scraggly and skinny. I pray he will one day get to his real beauty again.

Any ideas for entertainment for a sick / injured / depressed chicken when it is raining?

Here is our weather report:

Some areas, especially closer to the coast, have received three or more inches of rain in the past couple of days. The National Weather Service says another three to four inches are possible across the area in the next 24 to 48 hours

Yuck! I understand,.. we are in the same boat,.. or need to be,.. a big system just keeps bringing rain out of the Gulf and dumping it on us,. yard is a mess,. brooders can't get outside to play. I know you must be exhausted and I wish I could help you. I sure don't know how to entertain your Roo but I know that some one here will have a great idea,..
you sure have been an inspiration and I will pray for you as I head off to bed now.

LOOOONG piece of rope tie knots in it. Use food dye to color knots. Tie bells, colored bracelets, whatever looks interesting or makes noise to each knot. Hang in reach of bird. They also like to roll balls around . Throw some tennis balls in trailer with him.

A ball of cabbage or lettuce would be a good idea. He needs the greens anyway and with all of the rain it doesn't sound like he'll be able to get outside to eat grass.

The rope idea sounds good!

Something with bright colors and different textures.

What about your hens? Do you have any older, gentle hens that you could try putting in there with him? That would be what he misses the most is the company of other chickens. They are such social creatures and obviously you can't spend all your time out there being his best friend.

I agree it would be horrible to lose him after you've fought so hard for so long!

I really think that anything you can do to get him around other chickens is the best thing!

If I come up with anything I will let you know!!!!

I think I have some white cotton rope in the truck, I'll try that. This morning on his "breakfast" plate I put half a banana with honey on it, some cheerios in his yogurt and some tuna - along with of course pellets and grit. I don't know if he is enthusiastic enough to do the cabbage / lettuce - but I may try it.

All of my chickens are 4 months or less and still kind of figuring out who is going to be boss of the day. If he is doing well enough to handle the stress, I have to dust him again for mites on Tuesday, and then maybe I can at least put his kennel in the yard with them or something (if it EVER stops raining).

I have to admit I gave him a couple of worms. I figured - he was a free range chicken, all of Mr Bs chickens, my chickens were all out in the drizzling rain scratching and pecking at the ground - I feel very sure they were getting the worms and critters that were coming up. Plus - it is gapeworm risk or starvation.
