Layena, To use or not to use?

i have read on someone's page that they were against Layena feed but it didn't say why. I use this feed and don't want to continue if its not good feed.

Anybody else heard of this? Any problems?
I don't follow brands that much. My birds turn up their noses at crumbles. I didn't raise them from birth. I kinda like mixing up my feed just in case TSC is out of a particular brand. I'm kinda of a stocker. I have 500 rolls of TP. I counted the other day and I have 25 LARGE bottles of ALL laundry detergent and the same with Bounce. Paper towels plenty. Shampoo and conditioner. Before I retired I was worried about being able to feed myself. So I started stocking non perishables etc. Now I don't have to buy them so often and therefore have money for food.
I do the same now with my birds. the back of my SUV is stocked with feed, oyster, scratch. ETC. I buy dried mealworms 60 lbs at a time. One bag of feed one bag of mealworms in the metal trash can. Works for me.

I use Purina layers Crumbles as well. The one time the feed store was out of crumbles, I figured pellets would be fine. They didn't touch them, until I crushed them all up into crumbles. Yep, they are spoiled rotten just like the dogs, cats, and human kids.

I started my girls on Layena, crumbles but they prefer the pellets. In the winter I do feed 2 cups of higher protien food in hot water for energy. But they have Layena all the time, it seems to be working and why mess with goodness!

Like another said, choose your own foods, yes, listen to others, but we can judge our birds for ourselves.

As for soy, I know a friend that cannot eat a certain brand of chicken because of the feed that is consumed has wheat in it and has celiac disease (spelling) .

Edited for comment- Its really neat to read who's birds like crumbles or pellets. Does anyone feed mash?
I've only recently read about mash, but haven't done it yet. Will do it soon though.
You mentioned mixing the feed with hot water in the winter; that sounds like a great idea! I live in Texas, so I dont usually have to worry much about serving "hot meals," but we are having quite the cold spell this week...10°! Very unusual! I will serve my girls a hot breakfast in the morning and see how they like it. Thx!

What is the alternative if you want soy free chicken feed?

I've used this Layers feed a few years ago. It's soy free and 18% Protein. My chickens liked it.
I've never seen it in crumbles.
I feed a Non-Medicated Starter-Grower Crumble 18% (contains soy) to my layers and non-layers with Oyster Shells separately. GC

I used to make mashes with chick crumbles before they switched to whole grain grower. Just add warm water and mix -- they love it! I add warm water now to the grain, as well (I think it makes the vitamins "stick" better); it does absorb the water, but takes a lot longer.
