Layer chicks fed with Cornish X

Quote:
I've had no problems raising WLR Cornish , Easter Eggers , and CX together other than a few of the others feather plucked the CX for a period of time ; now that they're in a bigger pen there's no problems at all . I have always kept enough feeder space so that every bird can and does eat at the same time . There's still a little pushing and shoving at feeding time but it settles down in a couple of minutes . In fact , there's been a bonus of the skittish EE being calmed down by the friendly CX and the EE now stand calmly next to me in the pen . I believe the main facters to their successful mixing has been a large coop area opening into a roughly 625 sq ft pen for the 24 birds , plus added feeder space .

What type of nipple did you get from them? I looked at their website and didn't see any thing for poultry or for that price. Is there any chance you have a close up shot of your waterer? I would love to see it if you do.
Thanks for the info!

do you just move the waterer by hand? i guess i'm confused how the waterer moves with the tractor when the tractor is being dragged to a new place.. ? do you just pull out the waterer and then set it back down when it's in the new location?

i'm interested in making a nipple waterer... sorry for all the questions..

I used to do it all the time. Since I had to order 25 or more chicks to make a shipment I'd order a dozen egg layers and 18 - 20 Cornish X's raise them together and slaughter the broilers. Only problem I ever had was when we went away and I hired a HS kid to feed the 4-month old birds and the temperatures when into the 90's. He wasn't knowledgeable enough to know how to give the birds relief and, because they were so large and well insulated, a dozen of the Cornish died. I came home to three garbage bags of dead birds. He felt real bad about it and I still, after 10 years or so, give him a tough time about it.

the nipples are the push in poultry water nipples from Tek Supply, they may have cost a bit under or a bit over 2.00 and they are orange with a black rubber thingy. At this point I move the water daily by hand when I move the pen.

here is a bit better pick of one that is suspended in a permanent coop, the hens are drinking from the nipples. I will try to make time to get you a better pic today but if you go on the feeding wand watering thread and do a search for nipple waterers you will find better info and pics from others.

Wait, are we married to the same person?

It is possible I suppose. Mine just shake her head every time she sees me on here!

Thank you for your help. I was able to find the nipple drinkers on TEK's website. I ordered the screw in type and I'll see how I get along. Once again thank you!
