I just switched to layer feed. Is all layer feed pellets? I was expecting it to be more like crumbles, I thought you would have to get pellets specifically. Pellets are fine I was just surprised. Also when should I start getting oyster shell for them? should I wait until they start actually laying?

Most wait on the layer mix until they lay, and you wouldn't need oyster shell until after either. As far as the pellets many people say they have less waste with it, if your birds eat it ok then it will be fine. How old are your chickens? Are they almost ready to lay? If not I would feed them the grower until then. Have fun with your chickens.

they are kind of a mix in age but the majority are around 17 to 19 weeks. They have started to make little nest spots on on the ground and are getting the boxes and shuffling the hay around.

Well you might want to mix the food now so they know the new food is ok. Is it crumbles like the grower, or pellets? Maybe it will just take them some time, mine don't like when the feed changes either, but after a bit they start eatting it and seem to do fine. Sounds like your at that point of " Maybe tomorrow someone will lay" thats the point I was so wanting my fresh eggs, and it seemed like forever.
