I am a newbie and would like to buy 2 layers...prefer young in age. Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to BYC!

The breeds I would suggest are Buff orpingtons, Barred rocks, Red sex-links, and Silver laced wynndottes.

If sheer egg production is your main objective, I would recommend Sex Link chickens, which are the hybrid brown egg layers used by commercial laying houses as they are egg laying machines. Although they are marketed by different hatcheries under a lot of labels, there are only two basic types, Black Sex Links (Black Star) and Red Sex Links (Red Star, Brown Sex Link, Gold Sex Link, Cinnamon Queen, Golden Buff, Golden Comet, Isa Brown, Hylines, Gold Hylines, Lohmans, etc.). I personally prefer the Black Sex Links as mine have been friendlier, and laid slightly better in really cold winter weather than my Red Sex Links. If you prefer a standard breed (as hybrids don't breed true), I would recommend Black Australorps. They are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Until it was broken by a caged White Leghorn in 1979, a Black Australorp held the world laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days (still the brown egg laying record), and while mine have never reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I have still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
