Layers not pluckers... hopefully lol

After a long day of cleaning, washing clothes & a little tv watching for minutes mainly just letting in run in the background. I finally have time to reply to messages!!!

Sean I definitely will thanks for the invite!!! How about this Texas weather lol you’ll either love it or hate it!!!

I don’t supplement calcium nor oyster shells as the Layena Plus already has oyster shell, calcium & manganese plus lots of other stuff & seems really complete at it’s point!!!
Once all my girls are laying in going to switch to that too, easier.

:frowHi Trey and welcome to the flock! Congratulations on getting your first flock! You are going to have a wonderful time chickening here with us and with your beautiful RIRs. As always with any new hobby or endeavor, there is a lot to learn right from the get-go and lots of info to sort through! Love your girlies, take good care of them, and they will reward you many times over! Best wishes! :hugs

It is a good quality feed - for LAYERS.
ChickenCanoe
Thank you for extensive knowledge you passed along to me in your post!!! I honestly do greatly appreciate it!!! However I started them on Layena Plus at 10-11 weeks old.

Probably could have put that a little clearer my fault. I agree RIR is a great breed & my grandpa had some when I kid & another breed I’m not exactly sure what they were!!! That’s one of the main things that got me interested in having laying hens of my own, remembering eating fresh fertile eggs at my grandpa’s house growing up!!! Although mine will not be fertile as I have no room for roster currently!!! Again I appreciate all the effort you put into the advice you gave me!!! Thank you for being so diligent!!!

Respectfully,
Trey Hooker
You're welcome. Good on you for seeking out more information.
11 weeks is still way too young for such massive doses of calcium.

Ironically ChickenCanoe you call yourself an educator while only bullying!!!
Hi Trey.
I'm terribly confused by this post. I went back and read what @ChickenCanoe posted and see absolutely nothing bullying about the information that was provided for you or the manner in which it was delivered. It was spot on.
The complete feed, Layena, that you were feeding 100% to your young pullets and are now mixing 50/50 with grower is still a complete feed designed ONLY for chickens that are producing eggs. Until a chicken actually begins laying, the excess calcium in the feed will harm them.
As I posted, I have never in my life purchased a bag of layer feed. I keep my flock on an All Flock type of feed and offer oyster shells on the side for the actively hens and pullets. That is always the safest bet.
What will you do when your chickens molt and stop laying? They do not need that extra calcium and benefit greatly from more protein than the 16% that is offered in most layer formulations.
