I am trying to find out what the best size for a laying box, I was told to try 1'x1'. Any other suggestions?

and Welcome To BYC! X2, it will depend on what breeds you have, you can go larger without problems, 12x12" seems to be the most common size if you buy kits (good for smaller standard common egg layers like Leghorns etc), a lot of people do like to use slightly larger boxes, 14x14" or 16x16", especially if they have larger breeds...it also seems to help keep eggs from being squashed if they are not as crowded, hens will try to share nesting boxes.
