I am trying to find out what the best size for a laying box, I was told to try 1'x1'. Any other suggestions?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, it will depend on what breeds you have, you can go larger without problems, 12x12" seems to be the most common size if you buy kits (good for smaller standard common egg layers like Leghorns etc), a lot of people do like to use slightly larger boxes, 14x14" or 16x16", especially if they have larger breeds...it also seems to help keep eggs from being squashed if they are not as crowded, hens will try to share nesting boxes.
For bantams, 10x10" seems popular.

Welcome to BYC! I have "big bottomed girls" - black sex links, buff orpingtons, Delawares - so we opt for larger. Right now we have a large communal box that three can fit in but we previously had individual boxes about 15 x 15 which gave them plenty of room to move around in.

I'm glad you joined our community.

My chickens have 12 inch x 12 inch nest boxes, and that seems to work for them.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X2 on Kelsie's advice. Make sure though that the nests aren't too big because then they may try to lay in them at the same time.
