My chickens are having their first lay (a couple months before expected). Several of the eggs have a tiny hole, can't even see it, but they bubbled when i put them in water. Are they safe to eat? Have any of you fed eggshells to your chickens for extra calcium?

Could the chickens have pecked the hole in them?
I occasionally get a tiny hole in some eggs.
If the eggs were clean and they are thoroughly cooked, they are likely OK.
What were they eating prior to resuming laying?
I sometimes mix dried and crushed egg shells with the oyster shell in a separate container from feed - especially when only some are laying.

Were they big bubbles or tiny bubbles? Egg shells are porous, so some tiny bubbles are to be expected when you hard boil them. Even store-bought eggs will have some tiny bubbles when they are hard boiled & they typically have the roll-out nest boxes where the hen can't peck the egg. They're perfectly safe! :thumbsup

The bubbles were teenie tiny and in a constant stream, I was soaking them in the cleanser/water mixture. Do you think they are safe to eat?

Thanks!

They were eating their pellets, grit, and cracked corn scratch. I give them meal worms and a snack mix too some. This is the first lay, 3 of the eggs out of 8 had the little bubble line when I soaked them in the cleanser. I guess they could have pecked them, but i can't see the holes, just the bubbles. Actually, come to think of it, if I had used the wipes on them instead of soaking, I wouldn't even have known! I've been wanting to try the oyster shells, too. Thanks!

When my chickens lay their first eggs I usually wait a few days because mine birds always lay soft shelled eggs then turn thicker once they lay a few times after. Your chickens eggs are probably soft shelled and formed a whole when it is easily pushed around or pecked at. Anyway, I am sure the bubbles are fine.
