What do I do? My barred Rock does this every day, she'll go into the coop on her straw bale to lay and will just sit there for over an hour panting trying to get an egg out. She laid an egg 3 days ago (she just started laying), and went in there for the last 3 days, and no egg. She eats oyster shells, to the best of my knowledge. I have 2 waterers out there so they don't have travel far.
Please help, she is still in there right now.

I thought she might be egg bound too, but she seems healthy, running, somewhat thin, energetic. I picked her up and my husband checked her vent and said he didn't feel an egg. I don't know what to do? Has this happened to anyone where the chicken laid for hours but no egg, 3 days in a row?

Yes, one time it took Nugget, my fave. hen 4 hours in the nest box until she layed her egg. I didn't help her or anything either. She lays Jumbo eggs by the way. What size does your's lay?

Yes, and once I had to wait almost a week for my BO to lay an egg, which was unusial. If shes acting normal, I guess she isn't egg bound.

This was her first egg 3 days ago. Since then, every day lays for longer than an hour and nothing! Do you think she will eventually lay? Do I need to keep distractions away, like other chickens? What should I do? I am very concerned!

Wait was that her very first egg ever? Or even close? My BR Oreo layed her first egg, then went into the nest box every day for a week. Then she FINNALLY layed her egg. I would just let her be I guess, my opinion is that she'll be fine.

She sounds egg bound, but not showing any signs of distress (besides the laying for hours). She's happy, continues to want to be pet, runs to take everyone's treat, pecks at me if I am not fast enough. I just don't want her to go through this....

Yeah that's her first egg. I found soft shelled eggs splattered at night in the roost, but whatever, that happens. But yes, she layed this long one, and then nothing since then; but she's trying awful hard!

oh I am sorry! When she's in the nest box is she all curled up or is she curious and has her head up, looking around? I understand that nobody wants to see their pet suffer.
