Laying in same nesting box?

My girls didn't like the community nesting box I built them. Alot of squabbling and racket from the three that are laying. I went out and bought 2 covered cat liter boxes and they love them! Very private. Chickens are so funny!

I had a row of 4, one partition broke down and we removed it. Then we had 1 communal and 2 singles. Some days the "community nest" is loaded and other days it's a different nest. I think they just didn't read all the poultry text books we did.

We have the 10-hole nest boxes and i never put the bottoms in all of them, they don't use more than half at a time. Guess it saves me a crouch or two when easter egg hunting.

That is so funny, mine are the same. We have four nest boxes and most use the same nest box. My husband went out to collect eggs and there were 3 girls in the one box together. All quiet and just sitting there.

The other lower box does get used and the two uppers sometimes get used. I noticed that the RIR's are the ones that will go ahead and use the other boxes.

Chickens are so funny. I enjoy them so much.

. I have 3 Americana's, a SLW and a Barred Rock. I have been getting 2 brown eggs everyday for the past 3 weeks or so and have only had them in the same nest once.
Well today (to my surprise) ....... there were 2 brown eggs and a tiny blue one

and I have 5 boxes for them to use. Chickens are so weird LOL

My reasoning is that they lay in the same box because its already been deemed safe by whoever put the first egg there. I have a 12 hole nest box (4 chicken laying, I used to have MANY more) and they all use one. When I had a flock of more than 60, they'd still only use 2 or 3 of the boxes. You could try putting fake eggs or golf balls in multiple boxes and see if that encourages them to use the others, but I have that going on now and they use just one of them!

Once I put golf balls in each nesting box, they used all of them. I once found 3 trying to cram themselves in one 12x12 nesting box, it was pretty funny, but I worried about eggs breaking or getting kicked out. Fake plastic eggs works too.
