OK so yesterday one of my BRs lays her first egg
woot.gif
(mid afternoon time) .... SOOOOOOO this morning I go out and find a open soft shell (not very large) that was pretty freh it seemed. The soft shell was not laid in the nesting box, but looks to have droped while the hen was on roost.
So this evening I come home hoping to find another egg, either from the new layer or her sister but NOTHING.....
So I assume the soft was from the same hen. But why after laying a perfect egg and is this normal? And di her "clock" rest to sometime in the AM? Thanks in advance!

I know when my hens first started it took a bit for them to ramp up. And I think that perhaps in a new layer a soft shelled egg might just be the system trying to get itself working right. Are they on layer feed? If so, I would just give it a few days, you should be seeing eggs on a regular basis soon!

make sure they got calcium. At least that's what I read. If they're in transition mode with the feed maybe that's why.
Or maybe the power went out and her clock needs resetting. If you lift up her left leg you find the wind up nob. Make sure you turn it clock wise.

i wound the wrong way! OH NO!

Yeah, I have had oyster shell free choice for them for weeks now and they have been on layer feed for awhile now.

well yeah, thats my point... if she laid a soft shell prior to daybreak yeasterday....then where oh where is the new one??? I'ts probably just the "new dad" syndrom on my part, but I just want my girls to be fine

she should kick it into gear pretty soon and its okay to worry shes a new layer so of corse things arnt going to start out with an perfect egg a day. a soft shell is very common for new layers. and how old is she? i want to know all mine will be 24 weeks tommorrow and still no first eggs lol

she just turned 20 weeks, now her sister is a tad bit smaller, so it wouldn't surprise me if it takes her a bit longer.
