Right now we have 2 hen who have started laying. Been laying about a week we have gotten a total of 5-6 eggs. They won't lay in the nest boxes we provided, they are laying on the ground. I marked and moved the egg into the box yesterday and it disappeared. Went back out today and there was another egg on the ground. We have 2 types of boxes ones with tops and ones without and they won't lay in either one is there something I need to do?

Ihave tried to get mine to-lay in the nests, but they prefer the ground. I use new hay, plastic eggs in the nests, they just push the plastic out into the ground and still lay on the ground, so since the hay is clean I just let them lay wherever they want.

Why did the egg you moved disappear? Has something eaten it? Perhaps there is something in the nest box that the birds do not like.
