I usually just figure on 80% for birds out to about 2 years.

10 birds = 8 eggs a day on average

25 birds = 20 eggs a day on average

Leah,

mac was saying to figure that 80% of the hens that are laying will lay on any day. Or to say it another way a laying hen will lay 0.8 of an egg a day, if you have 17 laying hens you should expect 17 x 0.8 or 13.6 eggs a day.

I have 17 hens and I averaged 12.6 eggs a day last week so not all of them are up to laying speed yet. The last of my hens to lay produced her first egg last week so I consider last week to be just a bit shy of what I should get normally.

Every breed (as well as each chicken) has its own rate of lay.

In my signature you can see what kinds of chickens I have in my flock, BO = Buff Orpington, PR = Production Red, GC = Golden Comet, WR = White Rock, BJG = Black Jersey Giant.

They tend to lay best when they first start laying and then slowly decline from there. If you don't add supplemental light in the winter production will naturally decrease or halt for an annual molt. Seasonal temperatures, too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter can also effect production, but other than those factors egg production just slowly decreases as they age.
