Laying Rates

We have a five different kinds of chickens, we started out with four of each kind. We currently have 17 remaining.

Three of the kinds lay on average five eggs per week, the other two kinds of chickens lay about three per week on average.

Ten of the chickens should produce 50 eggs per week and the other seven should produce 21 eggs per week. I would expect to get 71 eggs per week on average from our 17 hens. Since we maintain lighting in the coop I'd expect the production to remain fairly steady until interrupted by molting.

We are currently getting better than 71 eggs per week and the last of our girls is just beginning to lay and a couple that started laying the last two weeks aren't on a regular schedule yet (still getting double and triple yolkers so their systems are not quite correctly tuned yet). Using our last 5 days to go by we are closing in on a 7 dozen egg week.

It is very nice! He gave me one of his Black Australorps and I have to say she is a fantastic layer.

gonzoandhispeeps: I was about to say the same thing about yours! And your hen has a cute kid, to boot!
Here ends the hijacking from the mutual hen-admiration society!

Can't address your leghorn question, but I can tell you that once my RSL pullets reached maturity I consistently got one egg a day from them, and it hasn't slowed down yet, even with the shorter days.
