Laying Showmanship Bird

Hi! So, I do 4h with my girls, and the coach I guess, suggests getting a bantam breed, that is small and easy to carry. Here's the dilemma- our chickens are for eggs. We are looking for some, but we don't know what breed. Any help? Remember, eggs and show*.




*They should be small enough to be able to hold in just our hand.

I would recommend a black cochin bantam, red cochin, or possibly even a belgian bearded millie fluer d'uccle

No problem! The d'uccle isn't a great layer, but is a great showmanship bird. Some of the others are chickens that I have, and they give me an egg at least every other day. They are also very pretty but not as pretty as the d'uccle.

Look into oegb's as well, lots of color varities but still small in size. I've raised Cochin bantam mixes, pyncheons, and I currently have a silver ginger oegb broody hen raising chicks, a mixed breed(guessing) roo and a silver breed oegb hen. Then I have my starter egg flock.

Ok, I have a question. From what I've read about them, Polish are decent layers correct? But they also are good at showmanship, right? Are they to heavy? I've thought about OEGB's a lot.

They are tallish, but they are lightweight

Of the bantams that I have had, RIR and Barred rocks have been the best layers, and have mellow temperaments as show birds.

Go to horstmanpoultry.com and look at his birds. He has good birds reasonably priced. Also try going to a local poultry show and looking for what suits you. One thing to remember - it costs no more to feed quality birds than to feed mediocre. Start with the best that you can locate.
