Laying

Hi everyone...still learing from this great site. Got my first dozen eggs, from 2 outta 3 hens. I have 2 nest and 3 hens and a too. The 2 that are laying use the same nest. Wanting to have chicks later, but how do I get one to use the other nest? Someone is resting in it, but not laying eggs.

They are both on the coop floor and the coop is 18" of the ground. I have the nest side by side using creates. (milk) I had a third nest in there, but took it out.

Yes, this might get more attention in the chicken behaviors section.

Put wooden eggs in the boxes, all chickens would rather lay where someone else already has.

I have some completely on the floor and some about 18inches high, all of mine lay in the ones on the floor

I have 10 hens in one pen, and they all use the same nest, even though there are 4. Every once in a while I will find an egg in the next nest box, I guess because too many where trying to lay at the same time.

I provide 2 nesting boxes in my silkie pen, and everyone uses the same little nesting box, and everyone else ignores the big blue one.

Typically get 6-7 eggs a day in one nesting box there. I have seen them share, even though it is very small.

There are ceramic eggs for sale on e-bay if you can't find any locally.
