Crowing
Here's a new one. We lost our long time rooster in February. The lead hen took over and even started crowing. About a month later I rescued a cockerel. He had never seen grass and never had shelter so his comb is so small it looks like a peacomb on a hen would. He's also not very colorful (Sapphire Gem) and his feathers are kind of ratty. The girls took to him as part of the flock right away after her was released from the quarantine pen next to them. And we really appreciate that he's not aggressive towards us.
over the past several weeks the hens have not wanted to be mated by him. They are no longer reacting to his dances and food prompts so he is just jumping on them and they scream like crazy . He has also been doing the same to the pullets who are only about 1-4 weeks from maturity (two different breeds). I stop it whenever I can but I work part time and am also concerned it will eventually make him aggressive toward me.
Today Mama started crowing again and actually attacked him at one point. Thankfully he didn't fight back, but I think the flock is sick of him. Mama has also been really sticking to the most over mated hen a lot recently, so she may have been defending her.
I plan on putting him back in isolation for several days this evening but am wondering if he will ever really fit in again.
Any thoughts?
