Today I had a little adventure with my flock that I'm sure others can learn from.
I went out to feed my flock this afternoon and allowed them to go out of the run door because usually when I refill the feeder, they follow me to the feed and back, no trouble, and are no hassle to get back in. But today, they didn't follow me, didn't want treats, didn't respond to 'who wants bugs!!' (which is what they've been trained to mean 'come').....just a general hassle to get inside. I opened the door of the coop with the hopes of herding them around to hop in that way (has worked before). They didn't end up using that door, and when I finally got them in the run, I was annoyed and just went back inside, WITHOUT remembering to close the door of the coop. Fast forward to tonight, I go down to lock up and Ruth is not there. Not in the nesting boxes (where she's been sleeping lately) not in the corners, not on the roost, not under the coop, not on the perch in the run.....fantic looking around in the whole backyard ensues (all while I'm in tears (parents are considerably calmer)). We looked over every inch of the backyard and went back inside because we thought that there was nothing more that we could do... at this point I'm assuming the worst (that a hawk got her earlier, she got hit by a car, etc) and my parents convinced me to go out and try again. Luckily, this story has a happy ending.....we went back out with our flashlights and saw that she was on the roof of the run!!!! (coop is way downhill from the porch so we had full view of the roof, but couldn't see the spot she was at if we weren't looking at it from the ground) we walked right past her earlier. We did a quick chicken-napping and all was well. Two lessons can be learned here:
1. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DOORS. ALWAYS. No matter how annoyed you are at your chickens. This could have ended MUCH worse than it did (all four chickens finding a neighbor's dog, a hawk.......) and I will never forget to check the doors ever again.

2. Don't give up on something until you KNOW that it's beyond your control. Ruth was fine, but if we hadn't gone out a second time, she probably wouldn't have been fine by the time the night was over. If I had stayed inside crying, we wouldn't have the happy ending that we do now. Until you've tried all of your options or found out that something ended badly (in this case, finding a chicken body) don't give up.

Well, do not feel alone. I did something similar the other day. I left the coop door open while in there tending to something and of course the girls were wanting to help me. Which, it is nothing I do not do regularly, and I usually do not worry too much about them getting out or if they do getting them back up. That is except for one who I never expected to go out the door. She is lowest on the pecking order and scared of everything and always has been. But, she goes out the door this time and when I try to get her up she is basically screaming for her life and runs/flies to the woods (very very thick) and gets just enough in them to think she is hid from me and she will not come out for anything. So, I go close the pop door since all the others are out in the run by now and I leave the coop door open thinking she would go on in there if I leave her alone. Eventually, she does come out of the woods and after a few attempts with her going back in the woods I finally get her in the run. Then, open the pop door and leave to go back to work. I get to work and it hits me that I left the coop door open!! I take back off for home and luckily they were all still in the run. I guess like the old saying goes "**** happens" and a lot of times by our on design.
Glad your girl is okay. But, never say never because we have a tendency of repeating are mistakes. Or, at least I do. 😁

oh no! i'm glad she is okay and you found her :hugs
thank you for sharing your story so we can learn from it! :)

Whew! Both of you, so glad these stories had happy endings! Since we are baring our souls here .... On at least two occasions (in ten years) DH has gone out to open up the coop in the morning to discover that he hadn't shut them up the night before! 😱 Fortunately, our dog(s) have convinced all the local predators there's nothing to see here, move along, so we had no unpleasant surprises (thank God!). My mom always used to say the good Lord looks out for fools and lovers and I know I fit in one category or the other, lol! 🤪

I am glad that everything turned out ok for you. And even more glad that it sounds like you are a sensible youngster that is willing to learn from your mistakes- I see too many people(kids and adults alike) that are too stubborn to admit their mistake and to learn from those close calls. Good for you!!!
