Learning all I can about call ducks !

Yes! She is broody alright. I would like to candle them though to remove anything not viable to help give the others a better chance. she has a hard time keeping them all under her she's so small. She started laying two days after I let duck back in with her. We had to put up a partition when it was hatch time so the babies wouldn't fall out the large cage and plus I didn't know if duck would hurt the little ones. I know what to look for when candleing,but since she is sitting her own and I'm not incubating is it OK to do that? And do I need to mark them some how so I put them back exactly how she had them ? I did candel the last eggs she had a few times and now since I lost so many of them i am afraid of hurting them.

Yes, candle them and pull any quitters/clears, depending on what day she is on?? No, candling won't hurt them... if they don't hatch or make it, it isn't because of candling... and no need to mark them, she will shuffle them around every day anyways...

A lot of Call drakes will help with raising the babies if they're bonded really well... or at least tolerate the babies... might try him staying with her and them under supervision to see how he does...

Thank you so much its been hard to find anyone that knows much about ducks. I might try to leave them together they love each other and didn't like being separated. I just need to cover the cage with the hardware cloth so new babies can't fall out. We built the cage before we knew the ducks we were getting were gonna be so small.

They're certainly tiny! I took a dozen adult Calls to a friend and she expected me to show up in a truck... she couldn't believe it when I drove up in a car and pulled the large carrier out with 12 Calls in it, lol!

I *might* know a few things about ducks... just maybe...

I can tell you know a lot!I was hoping you would find my thread lol. I've had some experience with owning caged birds like cockatiels but never ducks. I always wanted them and finally got them and was thinking oh no..I know nothing about caring for them!pretty much every Google search I tried brought me to this site so about everything I do know now is because of people like you!

[/IMG]this is their home now, they thought they were in heaven when I first got them. Their house has two inch insulation and we even bought a heater to keep their pool from freezing in the winter.

yes they are a bit spoiled. They tell me off if I don't pick dandelion greens for them every day now. When I first got them they wouldn't come near me. They still don't love to be handled but they will eat from my hand and don't flip out anymore. And yes! People on byc are awesome!
