Leaves!!!

Do you then have to remove the shredded leaves or just pile over them? I, or rather, my chickens have a dirt enclosure -- used to be grass the first 3 days. I was going to put sand in there, but I imagine the leaves wouldn't be too good for that if not removed.

You don't have to remove the leaves they just get turned into the soil in the run they "compost".
My chickens love the leaves.

We just recently expanded our run and it's partly grass now as well, which I know will turn to dirt by spring. I put leaves in over the grass, then in the spring I'll put down rock (to keep the sand from disappearing into the dirt), then sand over all. Hopefully it works!!!

My dad used to collect bags of leaves from people around town to use in his gardening, and every now and then, we'd empty a bag into the run. The chickens LOVE leaves--it's like a ballpit for poultry. My Polish crested even fell asleep in the leaf pile and ended up getting buried by the other chickens as they scratched around

Chicky Gaga is nearly completely buried and doesn't care at all.

Chicky Gaga? Where did you go?

I love your chicken names!!! Sooo funny! Chicky Gaga is too cute up to her neck in leaves!

No need to remove the leaves, but you can occasionally harvest soil from the run for mulching around trees or in the garden. I like to get all the work out of my chickens that I can. And they think they are playing!

I raked leaves yesterday.and dump then in their runs this morning, added some freeze dry meal worms and a little scratch feed.at first they shyed away from the leaves.than they had leaves flying everywere.I love leaves.that will keep them busy and also entertain them.

Thats funny because today we raked the yard. And dumped the leaves in their yard....didn't have to ask twice. And they are always under foot if your working in the coop.Especially our EE'S they are so nosey.
