I think that part of the idea (very simplified from my meager weak brain) is that the Cuban economy is not supposed to benefit from any kind of U S commerce. If any of us went there, we would have to spend some money, ergo, we can't go. also can't buy, import or have in our possession any Cuban goods. We once stopped at a tobacco shop in Sault Ste Marie just before reentering the US after a hunting/fishing trip near White River. DH thought he would like to have a few cigars. Canadian customs doesn't care, we can carry as many as we'd like over the border. American customs on the other hand isn't so happy about it. We really had to think about how much it was worth to get a box of cigars. The penalties for smuggling contraband can be higher than you want to pay.

I was under the impression that his brother Raul was now in charge.

Well there is a guy I know who lives by Springfield Missouri and he goes to Cuba 1 a year for a fishing trip. He doesnt have any trouble he loves it. He has to fly out of Canada though and he cant bring anything back into the states, (like cigars) . He doesnty have to pay any fines. The US has had an emabargo against Cuba since the bay of pigs. The US military base there is only there beause of a contract drawn up before Ol Fidell got in office. It is actualy a part of the US. Anyway. Have fun.

the US has a boycott on Cuba so we cannot go there or buy anything from there... it is because of Castro and the communist thing...on CNN yesterday they said they may lift the boycott now that Fidel is no longer in power...

Oh man, I would love to go to Cuba! Being born in Key West we had lots of cuban friends and resturants there. I LOVE cuban food.

Make sure your get some cafe con leche when you go. Its coffee with steamed milk. LOVE it!! From what I know cuba is/was very pretty. My grandparents visited several times years ago, until Fidal took power. I think his brother Raul is dictator now. Have fun and enjoy the food.

Fidel probably kicked the bucket months ago for all we know. I just thought you had some influence.......

You can also go to Cancun and then fly to Cuba from Cancun. ... but there is no promise of safety there.

Let us know the joys of working on a farm collective during vacation. I hear our new administration is hoping to pattern our economy after the one there. Have fun.
