Hey guys!
Every week before I go grocery shopping, I clean out both my refrigerator and my pantry. I give them all of my leftovers and they devour every bite! We usually have quite a bit of leftovers, and it lasts the a couple days... They absolutely love it! This morning my chickens had blueberry coffee cake, bacon, ham, and hot dog buns and coleslaw! :D
I am just wondering... does anybody else feed their chicken leftovers as much as I do? Is it alright for them to eat this much?
Thanks!:thumbsup

I feed my chickens mostly vegetables/fruit like watermelon rinds, potato/carrot peels, leftovers that I don’t eat, and sometimes stale bread. They sometimes get leftovers like what you said, like meat and baked goods but that’s more of a treat :p I wouldn’t feed them that all the time, just occasionally like junk food

Yup! Probably once or twice a month! It’s a treat! Who doesn’t appreciate a treat!? For the most part they usually will not eat what is bad for them. Though I did have them get into my garden and eat tomatoes but that’s a different topic (no ill effects). My girls love, love Chinese take out!

I absolutly do feed leftovers. I do a clean out the pantry every so often.
Rammon noodles (cooked)
Cans of fruit and veggies (outdated)
Stale cereal and crackers
Stale bread an left over cake
The only thing i dont give my chickens, is meat. I know they will eat meat and love it but i just dont like the idea.
I have always been cautious because chickens can go cannibal and i dont want them getting to like the taste of blood.

haha me too!

When my flock was smaller and I had access to more food scraps, I was feeding a majority (50-75%) food scraps. I still give them whatever I can get...all of our household scraps, things I get from neighbors and family, and occasionally leftovers from lunches and whatnot at work.

Food waste in landfills is a huge problem, and feeding food scraps to animals is higher on the USDA's "waste triangle" than composting.

I do give my chickens meat. If you're going to give them non-meat scraps (veggies, fruits, and grains) along with a balanced ration, it's likely that overall protein intake won't be as high as it should be.
