I would like to know the proper way to keep track of offspring... Does the rooster have a certain color of legband and the hens all have different colors... what about the chicks do they all have the same color if they are from the same hatch..... what if you have 1 roo and 3 hens.... do the chicks all get the same color??? are they numbered????
when is it ok to put a legband on a chick??? are there ones that expand as the chick grows?? does it bother the chick to have something on its leg????
is this all recorded somewhere??
what is the main objective of a legband???

Too few people tracking offspring. Good luck.

For me the purpose of the leg bands is to keep track of different breedings. Right now I have two roosters that I use for breeding - both are Salmon Faverolles. One rooster has a red leg band - all of his offspring have red legbands. The second rooster has a red legband himself as he was sired by rooster #1. However, all of rooster #2's offspring have yellow legbands. I keep a record book with who has what color (and what the number is on each leg band) and what hens were bred to what rooster. This is my first year of breeding and I will probably end up giving each "family" its own leg band color once I decide what breedings are working best. I have to do more research on this myself.

As far as kinds of leg bands, I use zip ties on the chicks. Once they get older/bigger, I switch to the expanding ring leg bands in different colors and sizes.
