I put Zip (cable) ties on my Jersey Giant Chicks just as soon as they hatched Six were from one breeder, the rest were from another, and they were fine bo breast irritation or anything, they don't seem to know the ties are there.
My chicks atched on the first of May and I changed the ties about two weeks later and I am going to change them again in the next day or so. I use toenail clippers to remove the old ties and to clip off the excess. the clippers are easy to manipulate.

Depends... what breed are your chicks? Something that you can decipher easily enough, but still isn't too much of a standout...

You can use colored markers, or nail polish for a very short time, but don't count on either one lasting very long. If you can't toe punch the zip ties are quick, easy, and inexpensive.

I tried putting the smallest available zap strap on, but it caused the others, and the chick it was on, to pick at it, so I took it off. I will just be diligent with the polish for now and close observation.
