Leg Mites on fosters

I felt the same. Id put the bird up to the neck only. In such a bad infestation where the bird us sufferjng it makes sense that the gas kills mites and eggs. I never thought about the eggs hatching out new generations. I wouldnt hesitate to do thus on legs like this bird

I believe he is suffering. He often hides in this really tight corner behind the little house. The 2nd worst is a hen and she is always holding her right foot up and shaking it like it is bothering her. I feel really bad. I don’t like to see them suffer so will most likely try gas day after tomorrow.

Our feed store also recommended Nu Stock because it contains sulfur, pine oil and mineral oil. I recalled I actually already have some on hand so I will apply that too. There is some redness and inflammation around the top of their legs. One had a few open sore spots and this cream should help heal those. Got some extra treats for them too. Phew!
Thanks for the advice and support. I really appreciate it!

I would definitely do the gas and A&D ointment - this is too severe at this point. definitely powder the bird with pyrethrin powder and the coop area too - if the roosts rest on something lift them and put the powder underneath, even in the nests - this is too serious to play games with these bugs - I'm as holistic as possible, but not in life and death situations or when bugs are so out of control

I did NOT get pics of the actual cleaning and I kick myself. But we noticed some scales have fallen off the worst 2 and we scrubbed a few more off. Coated them in Nu Stock and will check again in 2 days. Here are some pics from before we we cleaned them again. The big Roo jumped on the house and posed for a few pic too and you can see where some scales have already come off. He was pretty friendly too and let me pet him. In some way I think he knows I’m here to help. I will get more pics of the next round because I want to see and document the changes myself. But so far it’s been quite a learning experience!

I bet he knows! A lot of times rescued animals become the best animals to keep. Plus, I bet he feels much better.
How long will you have them?

We have had them 2 weeks tomorrow. Took us just over a week to get them settled, figure out what was going on and form a plan to treat them. But seeing some results quickly is encouraging.

I'm looking forward to watching this unfold. right now the first phase - kill the mites - then it's the question of eggs and new generations hatching out. That's what interests me about the gasoline, it dries out the eggs and is a complete cure - please keep posting. These birds are blessed to be in your hands!

I'm trying to hold off on gasoline as there are some open wounds on this. I just think it would be terribly painful for them so if we are getting some progress with the current treatment then we will keep at it until it doesn't work. Saving Gas as a last resort.
