I grew up on a low-tech egg farm in the 50s and 60s--well, some 40s, too. Every February, 1200 brand new leghorns from Pruden Hatchery would be stacked in our kitchen for the first few hours of their lives, until final preparations of our five brooder houses were completed. Each generation stayed for two years, so we averaged about 2000 in total. My brother and I did all the chores twice a day, excepting school mornings. We grew all our feed. When the last flock quit earning their room and board around 1970, my poultry experience ended. I found BYC when I googled "cackle box", which I will ask about in my first question.
