Leghorn crossed with a Rhode island Red?

trader joes sells hatching eggs....usually leghorn

Oh good, I was going to be really confused really fast

you can either eat them or hatch them as long as they say hatching eggs on them and i think they are refrigerated to. i have hatched refrigerated eggs before.

Wow thanks, the chart is really help full.
If you breed a Leghorn Rooster over a Rhode Island Red Hen you WILL get chicks that are Sex-links BUT not the typical Red or Black Sex-link.
By crossing a fast feathering Leghorn over a slow feathering Rhode Island Red there Male offspring will have normal feather growth at day one where the Female off spring will have more mature feather growth.
You can read more about this cross here https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information

Wait, I have to figure something out first... when you say you hatched eggs from Trader Joes, are you talking about eggs that you bought for eating? That had been shipped and refrigerated? And it worked?
And yes, they were the eating eggs that were refrigerated. The box was labled "Fertile Eggs", so I got the freshest dozen there was and two hatched. I have read of people hatching Trader Joe eggs here on BYC an I thought I would try it. Its much cheaper then buying hatching eggs online or from a breeder lol.

A RIR male / white Leghorn female cross is used to create the "Tetra Tint" which is sold by TSC in the spring. They are white birds with splashes of black or red here and there, and often red in the neck feathers. They're not very pretty, but they do lay lots and lots of large pale cream colored eggs.

Below is the result of a RIR roo over Leghorn hen but I'm not sure what she's laying. I have so many hens that it's rare I know whose egg is whose. Pretty, though.

So what is the difference between a Tetra Tint and a Sex link?
Great pic by the way

A Tetra Tint is a proprietary hybrid bred by Tetra Americana corp. http://www.tetraamericana.com/products/tetra-tint/
They are a cross between a RIR and a white Leghorn, but it is probably a lot more complicated than that because those commercial producers have access to breeding stock that a backyard breeder will never have. A Tetra Tint is mostly white with some breakthrough red or black splashes, and is a very good layer of large eggs that are very pale brown, or "tinted." I don't know if they can be visually sexed at hatch or not.

A sex link is a hybrid chicken that can be visually sexed at hatch. The chicks are literally different colors at hatch. The most common are Red Sex Links and Black Sex Links. Sex Links won't breed true--if you breed a sex link, you won't get babies that are visually sexable at hatch. (Except for Cream Legbar, but they're fairly rare)
Red Sex Links are the cross between a red rooster and a barred hen. Usually RIR roo over barred Rock hen. In the chicks, the males will be yellow and the females will be red.
Black Sex Links are the cross between a red rooster and a white Rock or a Delaware or a silver-laced Wyandotte hen. In Black Sex Links, the male will have a white dot on his head and the females will be all black.

You got your red and black recipes mixed up

I wonder if the tetra tints are different than other red sex links cause of dominant white in the leghorns vs silver in the rocks/wyandottes/etc?

Tetra is a major poultry genetics corporation from Europe. The "Tint" is just one of their high production, hybrid models.

Like the other poultry genetics corporations, they maintain their own parent stock and criss and cross their birds to produce the various models they sell to other hatcheries around the world. Since the parent stock, in many cases, has been selectively bred for so many years, it is almost impossible to identify what "breed" they still are, if any. These are strains that meet the needs of the company. Sex linking is one way of assuring pullets for the commercial table egg industry, but producing feather sexing lines is another fairly efficient method.

The Tetra company website might disclose whether the "Tint" model is a sex link or a feather sexed bird. http://www.babolnatetra.com/tetra_en.html
