Leghorn Thread

I can't wait to see my RC leghorns.

The big single combs get frost bite too easily.

My Marans rooster looks like he already has a little frost bite on his wattles and his comb, just from this fall. I really didn't think that we had been that cold yet.....and his coop has good venting...odd really.

So yes, I am wanting to switch to only little combs.
If you water allows him to drag his wattles through water every time he gets a drink that could be the porblem. Because his comb would be wet and then either get cold or even start freezing. Just some thoughts

Thanks....that is a good guess.

I picked him up today to examine it closely, and it looks like just the front edge of his wattle, right where it would touch the water bowl edge.

if you want to chnage waterers so that that dosent happen. You can get a 5 gallon bucket, drill holes ib the bottom. Go on amazon and get nipple wtaerers. You can get 25 for about $12. Thats what i use, i have never had frosbite even with indianas weather lol

I'm in California so I don't have problems with frostbite. The old recommendation is to rub a little petroleum jelly on the comb and waddles. The water will roll off them. You could also try one of those heating elements that water receptacles are placed upon.
