Lemon Cuckoo/Buff Barred Ameraucana

Agreed. Many generations, a LOT of chicks hatched and most of them culled out, and knowing genetics enough to know what you're doing. Buff alone is a complicated color, adding barring to it without ruining the Buff color down the road and without ruining leg color, egg color, body type, etc in the process is tricky. Plus true Buff Ameraucanas already need help with improvement, so, that's another challenge.

that´s true.. one of the road blocks are breaking the Barring and Id linkage(id+ allows for dermal color/slate shanks on white skined birds) the other one is Di or very close gene to it(confirmed by Danne Honours) can and will dilute shank pigment.. that takes lots of breeding and resources.... OR....

you could keep an open eye for project birds that could help you out alot...

thanks nica, do you have any genetic paper to read about this?

ok let me digg some..

-----------------------------

As the Nagoyas had not yet been investigated as to the inheritance of their shank-and plumage-color and the genetic basis of shank-color in Silky fowls had also not been fully understood, the present ihnvestigation was undertaken to study the mode of inheritance regarding their shank-color.
Although there were two varieties of shank-color in Nagoyas i. e. , slaty shanks and willow shanks, all the birds used in this experiment belonged to the former variety.
Three White Silky fowls were purchased from fancier in April, 1952. These were recognized homozygous as to the rose-comb, polydactyly, skankfeathers and shank-color by breeding test.
The following experimental crosses were carried out among these two breeds, purebred S. C. W. Leghorns and purebred B. P. Rocks.
1) Nagoya (♀ ♀)× S. C. W. Leghorn (♂)
2) S. C. W. Leghorn (♀ ♀)×Nagoya(♂)
3) Nagoya(♀ ♀)×F1(♂)
4) S. C. W. Leghorn (♀ ♀)×F1(♂)
5) S. C. W. Leghorn (♀ ♀)×W. Silky(♂)
6) B. P. Rock (♀ ♀)×W. Silky(♂)
7) F1(♀ ♀)(B. P. Rock(♀♀)×W. Silky(♂)×F1(♂)(B. P. Rock (♀♀)×W(♂)
8) B. P. Rock (♀♀)×F1(♂) (B. P. Rock (♀♀)×
W. Silky (♂)
The following conclusions were drawn from the above experiments:
1. T he slaty shank in Nagoyas is expressed by sex-linked genes, idid, non-inhibitor of dermal melanin, and autosomal genes, WW, inhibitor of epidermal lipochrome.
From this result combined with their plumagecolor, the genotype of the slaty shank in Nagoyas, is considered as follows:
♀-OOCCeeiiWWb-id-. ♂-OOCCeeiiWWbbidid
2. The expression of shank-color in White Silkies is mainly due to id gene, but the black shanks showing various degrees in the shade were observed unexpectedly in F1 males from the crosses of W . Leghorns x W. Silkies x B.P. Rock x W. Silkies. This may perhaps be caused by the partial suppression of barring induced by the stripe genes hidden under the white plumage in Silkies.
3. Though the shank-color of their progeny is somewhat obscured by the above mentioned reason, in the crosses of White Leghorns x White Silkies x or Barred Plymouth Rocks x White Silkies, the inheritance of the comb and bill-color is a typical sexlinked one. Therefore we can surely identify the sex in the hybrid chicks at hatching
