I'm new to the genetic naming stuff. are these the same or is there actually a buff jean?

Strictly speaking there is no actual, isolated buff gene. The buff gene is actually the gold gene in very dominant appearance on both the male and female birds. This gene is sometimes referred to as champagne blond.

thank you so a buff orpington is really called a golden orpintgon

They don't call it "golden" as the gold gene can manifest itself in several different shades, depending on what other color genes are involved. This particular shade of gold is labeled "buff". Another shade of gold is label "golden."
