I agree with SpeckledHen this guy is better than Lester in size, uniformity of the breed. I bet the next generation would be alot better and color would be more even.

It would be interesting if you can make a pedigree of the birds LOL! After all those are "prized pedigreed" stock!

I am not sure if you have any of Bama Chicken's lines in there, Blue Boy would be added in that line.

Jody, Have you found that if they are out in the sun too long it will effect their color. Like with dogs or horses get faded? My pair of lavs are growing up ok(they aren't quite as old as your bunch), but I'm not happy with how the lavender color doesn't seem as crisp as in your photos.

Ewesheep, I agree after we make our final selections, next gen should be very nice. We are putting together a development tree for all of our projects. I plan to put it on our web site eventually. We haven't bred Bama's line in yet, but plan to do so next year as we continue to work on conformation and to add more genetic diversity into the line to keep them strong.

scbatz - I'm not sure about the sun. It doesn't seem to affect ours, but we have pretty good shade here as well, so they're not in the sun all of the time. The color at this stage is still variable, so breeding & selecting towards proper color is important for this project.

Not to totally highjack this thread, but here are a couple shots of my pair. They are in with two black gals from another non-project hatching. The girls are all about 3 months old, the roo is maybe two weeks or so older......

What do you think?

Thanks for sharing pics. It's hard to judge the color by pictures. The sun seems to make them look brighter and lighter than they do inside a coop or in the shade. They look a bit darker than I'd prefer for lavender. My understanding is the lavender reacts to the black in how it dilutes it. I am setting up light pens and dark pens to see the difference in the outcomes. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

I do think they are a bit dark - esp compared to some that you have posted(these guys were in the shade). I plan on having him cross with those black girls in the pen with him. They are a bit heavier in the feathering than some of my others. I am looking to get the lighter more purple color as well as heavier feathering than what I am seeing in my "project" blacks. Of course, they are all young yet and not near as along as you are......
