Let me see your fire pits!

Thanks for your replies! Sterling Acres, I really like the pic of yours. I want one for cookouts and such. I really enjoy a campfire on fall nights! I have a grill on our deck, but cooking over an open fire reminds me of camping when I was a kid. We used to camp nearly every weekend spring thru fall.

Fire pit for cooking or burning trash? For cooking or for just having a fire of a night and watching stars, we have a very large, old hog trough! We can move it to anyplace we want it. We even put it up on the stand for my old galvanized wash tubs and converted it to a BBQ one day. Perfect size and shape to grill several things at once. You should have seen folks slowing down to see the Redneck BBQ!

I built a fire pit from a 16" Chevy truck wheel(rim). One of the nice things about it, I found a round 16 grill that fits nicely in it. To hide the rim, I piled cobble stones up along the side. We have had many "fireside" chats out there. We use ours for burning wood and food.

quercus21, This may sound dumb, but do you bury the rim, and this is to hold the dirt back? Also, did you line the bottom with rocks, gravel, or something?

How deep should a pit be?

The only dumb questions are the ones that aren't ask.

I set the rim right on the ground and piled the cobble stones around it. Eventually you make like a pyramid with the rim in the middle. There is nothing in the bottom except for the rim. I'll try to take some pictures in the near future. I am going to be processing some Cornish x tomorrow. We just returned from taking our youngest off to college.

We have one made of cinder blocks that we use for oyster roasts. It has a stainless steel shelf that lays across the top for cooking. The blocks keep on breaking though from the heat.

Any one know were you can get bricks or blocks that can handle the heat? Brad

we had a bothersome tree trunk that was just enough above the ground to hit the mower blade.. so we just put some old patio bricks around it in a circle added some more wood and a little *gas* and poof a fire pit.. we have had it for 2 years now.. whenever we get enough tree clippings we have a bom fire party and do smores.. tonight we were supposed to have doen our fire.. thanks to Fae we didnt do the fire part.

Ours is set on an old stump too. Fae is still getting us wet on and off. We got lucky though she turned before she got to us and went for you. Sorry . Brad
