Let out in Rain or Not?

ive got a tarp over more than half the run,so it doesnt get totally soaked.then i put a bale of straw, just busted some off and left the rest together.they have somewhere dry to walk and they love to bust up the straw bale...

mine want to be in the rain.. just light sprinkle!

Uhhh... I USED to have silkies and I'm sorry to say they did not have enough sense to come out of the rain on their own. I would often come home from work and find them soaked and huddled together in the pouring rain even though they only had to walk another 12" to a covered section of the run. Needless, to say I don't have silkies anymore. They were very cute but just too much work for my preferences.

I would suggest that you put some kind of cover over the entire run if you are concerned about their health because they WILL get sick (guaranteed) if you don't set it up so they are automatically covered. It could be as simple as tarping or even clear plastic. Also, it would be a good idea to add some sand to the run so it can drain better. But if you can't find sand right now you could even throw down a bale of hay/straw for the rest of the winter to help keep their feet up and off the wet ground. They will get a fungus (can't remember the name right now...) on their feet if they stand in the wet/muddy run for hours on end like MINE did.

Been there, done that

That's 32 sq/ft of coop space for 3 silkies. If the coop has a window to let daylight in, then I would be inclined to keep the silkies in their coop and not give them the option of going in the rain. Those feathered feet in a muddy run. *shudder* LOL.

Thanks Guys.
I think I'd better put down some straw tomorrow. I've got some bales that have gotten wet anyway.
When the weather improves I'll get some sand.

When I had mine (sold them last week

) they would go out in the mud but they aren't dumb and hated the rain. As soon as it would rain they would form a single file line and go back inside until it stopped. One time I was up there and it started to hail and they went insane

good times.....
