Lethargic and underweight Leghorn

Thank you. For future reference is there a list or article of must haves to make a chicken first aid kit?
That's a good question.
If you search BYC threads only with "first aid" you will find a lot of information.

We all do things differently. For me, I use products that I generally already have on hand for the household. I'll give you a basic run down of what I normally have. I'm a huge fan of buying store brand items or even sourcing the Dollar Tree!

  • Triple antibiotic ointment - good for cuts/treating wound, etc.
  • Coban/Vet/Sports Wrap (works great for feet/toes/busted spurs and husbands:))
  • Poultry Vitamins (I like Poultry Cell) but there a LOT on the market - find one that seems to suit your needs.
  • Epsom Salts (good for soaking injuries, prolapses, for egg binding, etc.)
  • An antiseptic - this is your choice really. Having a good recipe for homemade saline will often work really well for flushing wounds, eyes, etc. Chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) is something good to have or more expensive is Vetericyn but it can be used on eyes, for flushing, etc.
  • Small syringes come in handy - anything from giving vitamins to even flushing out and eye.
  • Sounds odd - but a dish pan or small tote that is suitable to place a chicken in for soaking. You may need to just wash their feet for some reason or clean their bum - having a container that you can do these things outside when weather is nice is great.
  • A cage/kennel or place where you can separate a bird if need be.
Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts too.
