New to the forum, have been enjoying the useful information as an outsider for a little over a month, got out girls four weeks tomorrow. We have three hens, all were doing well until yesterday, and would really appreciate some suggestions of where to start. Our amber star is lethargic to the point of not moving without encouragement, without any specific symptoms I'm drawing a bit of a black on the web.

She has always been the smallest and lightest bird, last to the feed but perhaps the bravest. After work she came out of the coop as we would expect, moving around the garden as normal. The other two became a bit distressed because of a loud mower so we decided to put the three back into the coop as they were not calming down. At this point White was really docile just standing under a bush, we had to lift her back into the coop. She had by this point developed an odd cough, just once every four or five mins. Over the next half hour she move back to the run and didn't move, we had to help her into the coop for the night.

This morning we let all the girls out and she walked down the stairs to the feeder, but didn't really feed. Now she's at the back of the run. She's seems to have lost volume, she's always been light. Oddly she looks great, feather look in great condition. None of the obvious signs list everywhere to look. Other girls doing good. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, cheeky as a bran new member I know but really worried about the little hen.

at this point I would put her in a kennel, in a warm dark place with feed and water right in front of her.

When putting her in the kennel...

feel her crop (hard, squishy, nasty smell, totally empty)

feel her keel/breast bone to see how much meat is on it (super sharp =super skinny. You can feel a healthy girl to compare)

feel her belly for a retained egg or squishy fluid.

look at her vent

check the color of her comb, red or blue

I have a similar problem with my 18month old cochin. She has become very lethargic in the last few days. She's last out of the coop in the morning and first in. She eats very little of the feed I give them, but she is interested in fruit and is foraging, slowly, but foresting. She moves around very slowly and often closes her eyes and sits down where she is to rest for a while. It is 35ºC (95ºF) in the shade here and has been since the end of June. There are plenty of large, shady trees where the chickens like to forage under and there are 4 water stations all in the shade, and I've started putting soda bottles full of frozen water out for them too. The other birds are all fine. Her faeces looks fine (no worms/parasites visible) Her comb and wattles are very pale pink.

by the way...welcome to BYC, and I am so sorry that you are going through this.

:hugs
Thank you Alaskan for the advice and welcome. Sadly things moved swiftly and the professional advice was that the she had congenital abnormalities.

If there is ever a bright side to anything like this, at least we know the other girls going to be okay. We were anxious that we come home every day to find another one struggling.

My advice to you would be the same. Give her a quiet space with feed and water and hope she improves.
