My normally exuberant pullet Dot is sick. I followed the questionnaire in the thread header.
1) Born June 24, Lisa Steele's Cookies & Cream, unknown mix. Feathered feet, 5 toes, mohawk
2) Lethargy, listing, slime in mouth, almost a hiccup. Trembling. Laying flat. Crop not full, butt clean. She may be gassy I think. Cecal-gassy smell.
3) Exhibits symptoms about 4 hours. Was perfectly fine this a.m.
4) other 8 birds no symptoms
5) No
6) I do not know
7) chick starter: 1c Tuckers Milling & 1c Kalmbach mash with half ripe bananna, 2 tblsp each black oil sunflower seed, bsfl, and dried Garden Delight from New Country Organics all made for 9 birds. Dot's the smallest so she doesn't overeat
8) poop Pic below. There was some clear liquid with it, not runny tho.
9) treatment so far pull her from coop and call vets. No one available.
10 ) I need help in stabilizing the bird til I get to vet 1000hrs 9/7/2024
11) Pics below
12) Well ventilated coop with Carolina Coops Hemp bedding (all her life). Metal dog lot Run has sand.

So this looks exactly like my hen! She had the slimy mouth and was fine during the morning and after a couple of hours couldn't hold her self up and looks exactly like that.

I have to say since mine passed yours might.

Can you give her Nutridrench? Mine just couldn't swallow anything. We did a necropsy on her and couldn't find much.

Hope yours gets better!

Thank you. 🤞I got some Nutridrench in her. Tried to be careful.

To stabilize this sick chick, give her one teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt and baking soda stirred into one cup water to drink. If she can't drink on her own, syringe it into her crop like the picture shows. This will elevate her blood glucose and keep her from going into shock. Don't over fill the crop.

When there is sudden onset of symptoms such as this, I suspect poisoning. A few years ago I lost three chicks at this age because they found a buck moth caterpillar which has poisonous spines. Very similar symptoms. Look around where this chick was earlier to see if there might be any strange insects. Petroleum distillates also produce similar symptoms.

Thank you. I'll do what you suggest. She stays on the coop/run combo all day. Not sure if some bug got in with her and she beat her 8 mates to it. Always possible because i think she's part roadrunner. I used weeaway coop cleaner last night, but rinsed it away. Mfgr says no harsh chemicals in it.

So, Dot's feeling better today. I took her to the vet. She is very healthy aside from the mucus. It's gone away by 90% also. But she's got 10 days of Albon suspension drops and quarantine. Weak ACV H2o to help cut whatever mucus is left. She's eating and drinking fine. But she's really missing the 9o'Flock :(
I so appreciate everyone's help. I feel if I'd have left her to herself she'd have been very miserable. The water/sugar/salt/baking soda mixture and the Nutridrench is probably what kept her going.

I think Dot, the Lisa Steele's Cookies and Cream (Frizzle Silkie?) Is bred for looks and personality. Not necessarily a hearty breed. Cutiepie though.
I think she got a respiratory infection from the dustbath. I say that because I changed from a small cow feed mixing trough to a larger one. It has higher sides. I use straight peat moss with a little DE because there's nowhere to get real dirt around here unless I dig holes in my yard. It's hella dusty when they're wallering around in there and maybe the higher sides trap too much fine dust.
I'll stop the DE, use hickory ash and add sand to the peat.
Any thoughts on this?
