Lethargic Pullet + Watery Poo + Won't Wake Up + Can't Stand Up...Please Help.

Her poop is watery diarrhea, no blood in it though....the chicken health handbook suggested that it could still be cocci even without bloody stool....

Her breathing is normal, no wheezing or sneezing, just calm normal breathing.

You are correct. A chicken can have cocci without blood in poop. Sulmet only treats 2 types of cocci out of the 9 types of cocci. Continue treatment with the sulmet as recommended by the directions. If there's no improvement after treatment, I recommend that you purchase Corid 9.6% liquid solution. Dosage is 9.5cc's per gallon of water for 5-7 days, change it out daily. Corid treats all 9 types of cocci. It can be found in the cattle section at your feed store. There isnt any withdrawal period with corid.

Thanks. I didn't realize the sulmet only takes care of two strains, I did read that I have to wait two weeks after ending sulmet before startin corrid because they're both sulfur based drugs and can damage organs if there's not enough rest period between both medications.

We just finished converting our shed to a coop, and we are currently using the dlm (as of this morning)

The chicks all get the acv in their water as well as oregano in their medicated feeds. We also use oxine and spray the water bowls and chickens and coop area every couple weeks.

So far none of the other chickens are presenting with any symptoms...everyone else is happily pecking the yard right now.

We haven't wormed them either, I throw a pumpkin out to them every couple months, while I can get them in season...because I read that the seeds are natural dewormers.

I'm going to wait this out, as long as none of the others start getting sick...I don't want to over medicate them or treat them for something they don't have.

Hopefully she improves in the next few days. I've got some yogurt I can try if she wakes up long enough to eat (organic Greek plain yogurt)

I tried scrambled eggs and oatmeal earlier, she had a nibble of the eggs but gave up after a few tiny bites.

Ahhh. Thank you for clearing that up. Should I still wait two week between treatments or was that misinformation as well?

If there isnt improvement after using the sulmet, wait a couple of days before administering the corid. During the 2 days in between, feed your bird probios or buttermilk mixed with scrambled egg or both, to rebuild her immune system and strengthen her.

Thanks for all of the input and helpful advice everyone, unfortunately she passed away this morning...my husband buried her in the garden.

We still don't know for sure what happened. I gave her a little bread soaked in milk when I woke up this morning...she was still breathing normally then, but she passed while I was at the store for groceries.

So sad that she didn't make it. Now we are eyeballing the rest to make sure it's not going to become an epidemic.

I guess that's part of owning chickens though, it's an ongoing learning process. We've converted to the dlm, and have started adding acv to the water bowls, we will continue to spray oxine weekly and check the girls for mites and lice, but we haven't seen any on them so far.

It may be my fault, there are so many products out there and in my desire to keep them healthy and happy, i didn't stop to think that we were covering everything with chemicals (no matter how safe they say they were)

Ill keep feeding pumpkin seeds rarer than worming, and acv instead of sulmet, but ill continue using the poultry protecter spray, ill just drop the spray to monthly instead of weekly.

Thanks again everyone. It was all greatly appreciated.

Its always hard to lose one...I hate that I get so attached to them, it's like losing a family pet...
