I have a question

I haven't broken down breeding groups yet from my youngsters. I've had the hens start laying in brooders before and these guys are all out in growout cages.

I have 15 hens and 6 or 7 roos in one pen. All getting a long so far, but will I have better fertility or less fertility?

I'm still trying to decide on some of the roos. I have several in a pen together and I've been waiting to see how big they get. Biggest boys stay.

I also have 2 trios of goldens. The youngest 3 I doubt will be laying by the time I need to set for this hatch. I want to make sure I get goldens though, so they'll all go in together.

Anyway out of the larger pen, has anyone left that many together? I need fertile!!! LOL

i'm a bit surprised you haven't had trouble with so many roos in the same cage. As far as fertility issues go you would be fine with only 3-4 at most for that # of hens .

They're just 2 days shy of 8 weeks, so that can change, but for now it's quiet in there. There's 2 golden roos and 2 hens in there that I'm going to separate probably tomorrow. I was wrong about my numbers of them though. I have 4 more in a younger pen, 1 roo and 3 hens.

Still trying to figure out who my keeper roos will be. One in the all male pen is starting to really fill out, so I'm watching to see if he gets bigger than any I left with the hens.

As far as eggs, yesterday was my best day ever. Out of 12 hens I get 9. Been getting 4 to 6 a day. Only one so far today though. Guess they figured I had my quota. LOL I get eggs later in the day usually, so I still may have a chance to get more. If not then today is my worse day for eggs. hehe

Really hope the ones that haven't started laying yet wll hurry up. I want to put a few in the bator and see if anything develops. Sure would be nice if the goldens started up, so I could hatch out more. Just wish I had more than one Tuxedo. Popcorn is pushing out eggs, but doubt I'll get another Tux from them.

*looks up from the chemestry set*

Got my eggs ordered today, they're comming priority on monday, so should arrive by the 1st Thurs. I went with a colony pen breeder with a good mix of larger birds, so its a nice break from my uber planned hatches.

Thank you love, I had to shuffle a few cages this weekend, and i figured i'd order a batch incase mine decide to strike. Work has been slamming hard, already 1500 bars ordered this month, so i'm living in the lab coat this month.

When I finally decided to 'check' my birds to see just how many roos and hens I had, I was kind of surprised to realize that I had only 6 hens...out of 15 birds!! No wonder I wasn't getting many eggs and all the known (brown, gold) girls have bald heads! Other than the hen-pattern baldness, I didn't have any problems. I'm working on getting my numbers flopped the other way....give the girls a bit of a break

I've sold several males and kept a few more females from hatches, so I'm getting there. My biggest problem is wanting to keep the different colored males (tuxedo, rosetta, white, brown, cinnamon, gold) and not having enough pens to keep them with their 'required' 3-5 hens. I don't think my pen is quite big enough for 30+ birds!
